Police Dispatcher

Job Description

The police dispatcher is a specialized classification within the police department which provides essential communications between campus law enforcement headquarters, campus police, community service officers and parking officers in the field, outside emergency and law enforcement agencies and the public.

The Communications Unit is a primary Public Safety Answering Point and incumbents must screen all 9-1-1, Blue phones emergency business lines to determine the appropriate level of service needed in emergency and non-emergency situations and allocate appropriate personnel and resources to incidents. Incumbents must enter calls for service into a Computer Aided Dispatch computer system, access campus information, and query local, state and national law enforcement databases. Dispatchers must monitor the alarm systems, contact appropriate parties, initiate police and/or fire response and set off the evacuation of a building or the entire campus if necessary.

Dispatchers are required to multi-task quickly and efficiently. Incumbents are required to work independently, react quickly, and demonstrate good judgment and discretion in stressful situations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid California Driver's License
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience utilizing a two way radios
  • Experience using a multi-line telephone
  • Experience typing
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment such as printers, photocopiers, and fax machines
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment, maintaining composure, prioritize service requests and perform multiple tasks at the same time
  • Must be able to speak clearly and concisely, transfer information accurately, and handle a wide range of interpersonal interactions
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background investigation including a fingerprint check

Preferred Experience

  • Knowledge and prior use of a phonetic alphabet and law enforcement radio codes
  • Experience querying and understanding returns from law enforcement databases
  • Completion of the 120 hour POST Public Safety Dispatchers' Basic Course

Special Working Conditions:

  • Must work 3/12 hour rotating shift assignments including holidays, weekends and nights.
  • Must report for work when called in on mandatory overtime.
